Birthday Boy!

So Friday night was too poppin’. Just about everyone was in attendance for Will’s 20th birthday, and for the most part the night went just right.  Good spot in the Bronx with chill people and good vibes.  Music was bumping and bottles were being popped; The strippers even came out.  All in all it was a great night, and we’re happy to have some photos to remember it by.  Shout outs to everyone who came through for my partner in crime.  More photos at the jump. Levi Maestro + Vans Vault

So if you follow smooth-nyc.com at all, you know my (Kev) biggest inspiration currently is Levi Maestro. He’s been featured on this blog countless times, creating genuine and inspiring content time after time.  Today he went live on Twitter and Facebook announcing something that he has been waiting to do for 2 year; my man’s got his own Vans. He’s Off The Wall. Do you have to like the kicks? No! But respect the hustle and appreciate his style. Proud to see what Maestro has been able to accomplish since he first came up on the scene. Love.

Jonathan Mannion: A Camera Legend

The Leica Camera Blog sat down with photographer Jonathan Mannion for an interview about his history behind the camera. This dude is a straight up genius.

A Cleveland, Ohio native, Jonathan Mannion began capturing images of up-and-coming urban music superstars after working for a year with world-renowned photographer Richard Avedon. In 1996, he launched his professional career by shooting the photographs for the classic hip-hop album “Reasonable Doubt” by Jay-Z. In the years since, Jonathan’s photography has grown alongside the culture he so loves, helping to visually define an era of urban music. As DJ Quik once pointed out to him, the world sees hip-hop through his eyes. However, he is modestly circumspect about his role. “I’m just a messenger,” he observes, “and I’ve been given a talent to document an extremely important era of music history. I have a love for hip-hop that goes back to when I was a teenager, and I feel blessed to have had the chance to shoot the artists I’ve worked with. I’ve had the opportunity to grow with them and the photos I’ve shot over the years have become visual bullet points of their creative evolution and mine.” -via Leica

Today marked both the first day of summer as well as National Go Skateboarding Day.  As usual, I caught up with my boys John & AJ at the new Yonkers Skatepark that they worked their asses off to get built.  It was dope, man.  Contests, giveaways, good music, good people, and good vibes.  And one pair of giant scissors.  Me and Will took the chance to get some photos of genuine skaters having fun and doing what they love. Here’s a couple, more at the jump!

Proud of my boys for doing something special in our hometown.
